There’s an ongoing Gill Prince Bat Controversy involving Shubman Gill, India’s newly appointed Test captain. He has faced early criticism, even before leading the team for the first time. The talk is about the word ‘Prince’ written on his MRF cricket bat. Some people see this as a sign of his “inflated ego” after becoming the India Test captain. However, ‘Prince’ is simply the newest addition to the MRF bat series, a playful nod to the nickname ‘Prince’ that has been linked with Shubman Gill for several years now.

Gill’s Appointment as Test Captain

About five weeks ago, Rohit Sharma’s retirement from Test cricket created a gap in leadership. This happened just before India’s important five-Test tour of England, which is India’s first major assignment in the new World Test Championship (WTC) cycle.

Jasprit Bumrah might have been the logical choice to take over as captain. However, the need to manage his “workload” (how much he plays to prevent injuries) ruled him out. So, other names were considered, including Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant, with the experienced KL Rahul as an outside chance.

The selection committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, carefully chose the 25-year-old Gill to lead the team. They likely had valuable input from head coach Gautam Gambhir. Their decision was based on a “long-term vision” for the team.

Why Gill Was Chosen

Despite his young age, Gill has been a very important part of the Test team since December 2020. Even though he didn’t have much experience as a captain in “first-class cricket” (the longer format played domestically), he did lead the Gujarat Titans team for two seasons in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

His first season as IPL captain wasn’t a huge success. However, in the season that just finished, the right-handed batter impressed everyone with his creativity, calm approach (“composure”), and smart ideas, even though his team didn’t make it to the playoffs. These qualities likely played a role in him becoming captain, even with the current Gill Prince Bat Controversy.

Immense Challenges Ahead for the Young Captain

Now that the leadership role has settled on Shubman Gill, the challenges ahead for this young man from Fazilka in Punjab are huge.

First, he needs to improve his scoring touch when playing outside the subcontinent (countries like India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka). In his last 18 Test innings played outside Asia, his highest score has only been 36 runs.

Additionally, he must inspire his young teammates to be mentally ready for the tough battle ahead. India has lost a lot of experience recently, with important players like R Ashwin, Rohit Sharma, and finally Virat Kohli all retiring from Test cricket within a five-month period. This lack of experience adds significant pressure on the new captain, compounded by the Gill Prince Bat Controversy.

The Root of the ‘Prince’ Bat Controversy

Even before he has walked out for the coin toss as India’s Test captain for the very first time, Gill has faced problems that are not his fault. Instead of supporting their young captain, some online critics (“keyboard warriors”) on social media have been attacking him for a couple of weeks.

This anger has reached a peak in the last few hours because of the word ‘Prince’ on his bat sticker. This is the heart of the Gill Prince Bat Controversy.

The ‘Prince’ sticker on Shubman Gill’s MRF bat is a new addition. After the league phase of the Champions Trophy in Dubai in early March, Gill got a new bat sponsor. This company, MRF, has previously sponsored cricket legends like Sachin Tendulkar, Steve Waugh, Brian Lara, AB de Villiers, and most recently, Virat Kohli. Now, they have signed Gill.

Understanding the ‘Prince’ Sticker

Just being grouped with such champions would have thrilled Gill greatly. However, the word ‘Prince’ “emblazoned” (displayed prominently) on the MRF sticker has given fuel to those who like to see arrogance and ego, even when these character traits are clearly not present in Gill.

Shubman Gill is known to be a friendly and respectful young man. He has been given one of the most demanding jobs in any field in India. He has not shown any signs of being overly self-important or like a “prima donna.”

In the past, MRF bat stickers have featured other words like ‘Champion’, ‘Genius’, ‘Master’, and ‘Legend’ at various times. ‘Prince’ is simply the newest in this series. It is likely a playful reference (“cheeky takeoff”) to the nickname ‘Prince,’ which has been associated with Gill for a few years now. To suggest that this sticker shows Gill has an “inflated opinion of himself” is simply “overreach” (going too far), no matter how one looks at it. This explanation is crucial to understanding the Gill Prince Bat Controversy.

A Call for Patience and Fair Judgment

It’s not necessary for Gill’s critics to suddenly change their minds just because he has become the Test captain. However, the very least that India’s cricket community owes him is the chance to grow into his new and challenging role.

If one must judge the fifth-youngest captain in Indian Test history, it should be based on his batting performance and his “tactical acumen” (his ability to make smart decisions on the field). And even then, he should be given time to grow into a role that he clearly values, but which he didn’t desperately chase.

It is unfair to put immense pressure on him from the start and expect him to deliver immediately, or else face severe criticism. Gill will undoubtedly be protected from much of the negativity (“venom”) within the national team’s environment (“cocoon of the national set-up”). However, it is unavoidable that he will learn about the “furore” (public outcry) – what the Indian team calls “external noise.” And it is only human for him to be affected by it. The Gill Prince Bat Controversy is an added burden he must navigate.

The New Era in England

In exactly a week’s time, an exciting new phase in Indian cricket will begin with the first Test at Headingley in Leeds, England. India has not won a Test series in England since 2007, when Rahul Dravid was captain and lifted the first-ever Pataudi Trophy.

The first match for the “Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy” (as the Pataudi Trophy has now been renamed) could be exactly the inspiration Gill and the Indian team need. They are preparing for life in “red-ball lane” (Test cricket) without three of their most influential players of the last decade and more: Ashwin, Rohit, and Kohli. Despite the Gill Prince Bat Controversy, all eyes will be on his performance as a leader.
