For the year 2026, the Madhya Pradesh League (MPL) Scindia Cup will experience a significant MPL Scindia Cup Venue Shift. Instead of its traditional home in Gwalior, the tournament will be held in Indore. This exciting change is happening because of major construction work planned for the spectator areas at the Shrimant Madhavrao Scindia International Cricket Stadium in Gwalior. The Gwalior Divisional Cricket Association (GDCA) has received a substantial sum of Rs 50 crore from the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) specifically for this large-scale renovation.

A Vision for Modern Cricket

The ambitious renovation project aims to “enhance visitor facilities” (make things better for people attending matches) and “modernise the stadium’s infrastructure” (update all the basic structures and systems). Prashant Mehta, President of the Gwalior Divisional Cricket Association (GDCA), shared details with TOI. He stated, “At present, the capacity of the stadium is 30,000. We are working on increasing the capacity to 50,000 by adding another 20,000. For this purpose, another floor is to be constructed at the spectators’ gallery. We are working on how much strength is required to be increased.” This massive expansion is a key reason for the MPL Scindia Cup Venue Shift.

Temporary Relocation and Future Availability

Mehta further confirmed that the “Gwalior stadium will not be available for any cricket activity in 2026.” However, he assured that “Cricket activities will resume in the stadium in 2027.” The generous BCCI funding will be used to support several key improvements: the “expansion of seating capacity,” the “enhancement of visitor amenities” (making the facilities for visitors better), and the “improvement of entry and exit points” to ensure smoother flow for crowds.

The renovated “gallery” (seating areas) will feature “modern seating arrangements” and upgraded facilities, including new food courts and clean, modern toilets. The entire “second tier” (upper level of seating) will undergo construction during this renovation period, which is “expected to last several months.” These improvements will also include “protective covering against weather conditions,” ensuring spectators are comfortable, and “better sightlines” so everyone has a clear view of the game. The upgrade will also introduce “new safety measures and emergency pathways” in line with current international standards, thanks to the addition of another floor. All these changes are what necessitated the MPL Scindia Cup Venue Shift.

Indore Steps Up as Host

During the renovation period, the MPL matches will be temporarily shifted. They will be played at Indore’s cricket grounds. This “temporary shift” is crucial because it allows the construction work in Gwalior to “proceed without interruptions” (continue smoothly without stopping). The GDCA will closely “monitor the progress” to make sure that all work is completed “within the planned timeline” (on schedule). This flexibility ensures the tournament can continue seamlessly, even with the MPL Scindia Cup Venue Shift.

Long-Term Vision and Benefits

The GDCA has also thoughtfully “planned systematic maintenance protocols” (regular upkeep procedures) for the new facilities. “Regular checks will help preserve the infrastructure” (keep the structures in good condition) and “maintain high standards” for years to come. Furthermore, the stadium staff will receive special training to “operate the new systems effectively,” ensuring everything runs smoothly once the stadium reopens.

The completed, modernised stadium is expected to “strengthen Gwalior’s position as a regular cricket venue.” The improvements are designed to “align with current international cricket facility standards,” meaning Gwalior will be ready to host bigger and better matches. This project represents a “significant investment in the region’s sporting infrastructure,” benefiting not just cricket but the entire community.

The GDCA is confident that all major works will be finished before the 2027 cricket season begins. Before the stadium reopens, the association will “conduct thorough safety and quality checks” to ensure everything is perfect. The enhanced stadium is set to serve as a “premier cricket venue” (a top-class place for cricket) in Madhya Pradesh for many years. The GDCA also expects the upgraded stadium to “boost local cricket development and tourism” in the region. The modern facilities will greatly “enhance the spectator experience” during matches and other events, drawing more fans and visitors. Regular maintenance schedules will be put in place to ensure the new infrastructure remains in excellent condition. This long-term vision is a key outcome of the MPL Scindia Cup Venue Shift and the associated investment.
