The WI vs AUS 1st Test in Barbados, set to commence on June 25, will see a significantly altered Australian batting lineup. Cricket Australia confirmed on Friday (June 20) that star batter Marnus Labuschagne has been dropped from the squad, a major decision reflecting his prolonged dip in form.
Adding to Australia’s challenges, former captain Steve Smith will also be unavailable. He dislocated his finger during the recent World Test Championship (WTC) Final at Lord’s. These high-profile absences open the door for two exciting young talents: Sam Konstas and Josh Inglis, who have been named in the playing XI.
Labuschagne’s Form Dip Leads to Omission
Marnus Labuschagne, once a seemingly indispensable part of Australia’s Test middle order, has been experiencing a lean run in Test cricket for a considerable period. His statistics paint a clear picture of his struggles.
In 2023, his Test average stood at a modest 34.91. This figure further dropped to 30.93 in 2024. More concerningly, in the four Tests he has played so far this year, the 30-year-old has averaged only a shade above 16 runs per innings.
The final straw for the selectors appeared to be his twin failures in the WTC Final. Opening the innings in that crucial match, Labuschagne managed scores of just 17 and 22, failing to make a significant impact.
Selection chair George Bailey addressed Labuschagne’s omission in a statement. “Marnus at his best can be a really important member of this team. He understands his output hasn’t been at the level we, or he, expects,” Bailey stated. “We will continue working with him on the areas of his game we feel he needs to rediscover. We continue to value his skill and expect him to work through the challenge positively.” This indicates that while dropped, Labuschagne remains in the long-term plans, but a strong performance in domestic cricket will be necessary for his recall.
Smith Sidelined by Finger Injury
Steve Smith’s absence is purely due to injury. He sustained a dislocated finger while fielding during the recent World Test Championship Final against South Africa at Lord’s. The injury is significant enough to rule him out of the Barbados opener.
However, there’s a silver lining for Smith and Australia. He has successfully avoided surgery and has travelled with the squad to the West Indies. Doctors have advised him to wear a splint for approximately eight weeks.
There remains a strong chance he could return for the second Test. This match is scheduled to begin on July 3, provided the splint doesn’t impede his batting functionality. His recovery will be closely monitored.
“Steve needs more time for the wound to heal so we’ll give him another week’s rest and assess his functionality after that,” Bailey confirmed, expressing optimism about Smith’s potential return for the latter part of the series.

Sam Konstas, who impressed many on debut in the Boxing Day Test last year against India, is expected to open the batting alongside Usman Khawaja. Konstas’s fearless approach and ability to score quickly in his maiden Test innings (including an attacking fifty against a strong Indian attack) clearly caught the selectors’ eye.
Josh Inglis, another player who made quite an impression in his first Test outing earlier this year by smashing a century on debut in Sri Lanka, will take up the middle-order spot left vacant by Smith. Inglis’s century in challenging subcontinent conditions demonstrated his adaptability and aggressive scoring capabilities.
While Australia is yet to confirm the exact batting positions, the inclusions of Konstas and Inglis represent a fresh injection of talent into the Test squad. “We have made the decision to give Josh and Sam the opportunity to replace Steve and Marnus. We are excited to see them get the chance to further their fledgling Test careers,” Bailey added, highlighting the selectors’ confidence in the new guard. W I vs AUS 1st Test
