Tanvir Islam Leads a Stunning Comeback

Bangladesh vs Sri Lanka 2nd ODI lived up to its billing as an edge-of-the-seat thriller at R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. After trailing 0-1 in the series, Bangladesh bounced back in style, powered by a brilliant five-wicket haul from left-arm spinner Tanvir Islam. His magical spell dismantled the Sri Lankan batting line-up and helped secure a 16-run victory, leveling the three-match series at 1-1.

Shaky Start After Losing the Toss

Bangladesh were put into bat after losing the toss, and the decision immediately paid off for Sri Lanka. The visitors were under pressure early as opener Tanzid Hasan was dismissed for just 4 runs, edging to the wicketkeeper off Asitha Fernando. The score was a worrying 7/1 when skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto joined young Parvez Hossain Emon to steady the innings.

Emon’s Maiden Fifty Shines Bright

Parvez Hossain Emon impressed with a confident and controlled innings. Displaying maturity beyond his years, Emon played a mix of attacking strokes and calculated defense. He reached his maiden ODI half-century, becoming a vital cog in the top order. His innings included boundaries off spinners and pacers alike. However, his stay was cut short by Wanindu Hasaranga, who bowled him with a deceiving leg-spinner just when Bangladesh looked to build momentum.

Middle-Order Stumble and Hridoy-Jaker Rescue Act

After Emon’s dismissal, Mehidy Hasan Miraz fell cheaply, and Shamim Hossain, though aggressive, was caught attempting a big shot. At 117/5, Bangladesh were in deep trouble. Towhid Hridoy, calm and composed, anchored the innings, scoring a well-constructed 51. He found a solid partner in Jaker Ali, who also notched up a crucial 50. Their partnership added much-needed stability and took Bangladesh to a respectable total.

Lower Order Pushes Bangladesh to 248

In the final 10 overs, Bangladesh lost wickets but kept scoring at a decent rate. Tanzim Hasan Sakib played a gutsy cameo of 33 runs, taking the team closer to the 250-run mark. Mustafizur Rahman was dismissed for a duck, but the team managed to post 248 all out in 49.5 overs — a competitive score considering the pitch conditions and the psychological pressure of a must-win game.

Early Breakthrough in Sri Lanka’s Chase

Chasing 249, Sri Lanka got off to a poor start. Tanzim Hasan Sakib struck early, removing Pathum Nissanka once again — the fourth time in five games. However, Kusal Mendis and Nishan Madushka counter-attacked, scoring 34 runs in just two overs to put the pressure back on Bangladesh.

Tanvir Islam’s Game-Changing Spell

Then came the turning point of the match. Tanvir Islam bowled with precision and control. He first dismissed Madushka with a clever delivery that turned and took the edge. His biggest blow came when he trapped Kusal Mendis LBW for 50, just after the batter had raced to a quick half-century. From there, Tanvir kept dismantling the middle order, finishing with dream figures of 5/39 in 10 overs — his maiden five-wicket haul in ODIs.

Shamim and Tanvir Tighten the Noose

Charith Asalanka tried to revive the innings but fell to Shamim Hossain, while Kamindu Mendis couldn’t resist Tanvir’s variations and also perished. Sri Lanka slumped to 128/5, struggling against the spin web cast by Bangladesh. The scoreboard stagnated as the batters failed to rotate strike and lost wickets at regular intervals.

Liyanage Fights a Lone Battle

Janith Liyanage played a lone hand in Sri Lanka’s innings. His composed 78-run knock kept the hosts in the game, even as partners around him collapsed. Liyanage played smart cricket, picking gaps and waiting for bad balls. But Tanvir returned to pick two more wickets — Dunith Wellalage and Maheesh Theekshana — completing his fifer and derailing Sri Lanka’s chase further.

Chameera-Liyanage Last-Wicket Partnership Adds Drama

With nine wickets down, Liyanage found an unlikely ally in Dushmantha Chameera. The duo added 58 runs for the last wicket, bringing the target within 17 runs. Just when it looked like Sri Lanka might pull off a heist, Mustafizur Rahman trapped Liyanage off his own bowling, ending the resistance and sealing a hard-fought win for Bangladesh.

Match Summary

  • Bangladesh: 248 (Towhid Hridoy 51, Parvez Hossain Emon 50, Jaker Ali 50; Hasaranga 3/44)

  • Sri Lanka: 232 (Janith Liyanage 78, Kusal Mendis 50; Tanvir Islam 5/39)

  • Result: Bangladesh won by 16 runs

  • Series: 3-match ODI series tied 1-1

Tanvir Islam: The New Spin Sensation

Tanvir’s spell was not just match-defining but career-defining. At 27, he showed composure, variation, and control — attributes of a world-class spinner. His performance is being hailed as one of the finest by a Bangladeshi bowler in recent ODI history. With Shakib Al Hasan nearing the twilight of his career, Tanvir’s emergence is a welcome boost for Bangladesh’s bowling unit.

Final ODI – A Grand Decider Awaits

With the series now level, all eyes are on the third and final ODI. Both teams have shown moments of brilliance, and the stage is set for a thrilling finale. Can Tanvir Islam and Bangladesh’s bowlers replicate their heroics? Or will Sri Lanka rise to the occasion at home?

One thing is certain — the cricketing world will be glued to Colombo for a pulsating decider.

Brief scores: Bangladesh 248 in 45.5 overs (Parvez Hossain Emon 67, Towhid Hridoy 51; Asitha Fernando 4-35) beat Sri Lanka 232 in 48.5 overs (Janith Liyanage 78, Kusal Mendis 56; Tanvir Islam 5-39) by 16 runs.
