1 The BAN vs SL 1st Test in Galle saw Bangladesh gain a significant advantage on Day 4, largely thanks to a stellar performance from off-spinner Nayeem Hasan. Despite a relatively sparse Test career since his 2018 debut – having played only one Test outside Bangladesh where he didn’t even bowl due to a concussion – Nayeem seized his opportunity with both hands. He was included in the playing XI due to the absence of the rested Mehidy Hasan Miraz, who was recovering from a fever.

The BAN vs SL 1st Test in Galle saw Bangladesh gain a significant advantage on Day 4, largely thanks to a stellar performance from off-spinner Nayeem Hasan.

The 25-year-old capitalized on this rare chance, bagging a crucial five-wicket haul that ensured Sri Lanka did not surpass Bangladesh’s formidable first-innings total, despite being in a strong position to do so at one point. His disciplined bowling was instrumental in creating a momentum shift. BAN vs SL 1st Test

Nayeem Hasan’s Strategic Masterclass

After the day’s play, Nayeem Hasan revealed the simplicity and effectiveness behind his bowling strategy on the batting-friendly Galle wicket. “I tried to bowl in one good spot, and then adjust my variation there,” he explained.

“I tried changing the seam position from time to time. My line depended on who I was bowling to. I had different plans for each batter.” This nuanced approach, focusing on consistency while subtly varying the ball, paid rich dividends. BAN vs SL 1st Test

He further elaborated on his plan to build pressure: “It was a batting friendly wicket so we tried to bowl consistently in one area. When you cut off the runs, the batter gets into pressure. He tries to do something different, which can lead to a mistake. That was my plan.” This strategy led to Sri Lanka’s collapse from a commanding position, losing their last four wickets for just 15 runs. Nayeem’s crucial wickets included the dangerous Kamindu Mendis for 87. BAN vs SL 1st Test

Bangladesh Eyeing a Historic Win

With Day 4 ending with Bangladesh holding an overall lead of 187 runs and seven wickets still in hand in their second innings (177/3), Nayeem Hasan believes his team is in a strong position to force a result. Current batsmen at the crease, captain Najmul Hossain Shanto (56*) and veteran Mushfiqur Rahim (26*), both first-innings centurions, have consolidated the innings effectively. BAN vs SL 1st Test

“We have every opportunity to go for the win once we have a good total on board,” Nayeem stated confidently. He emphasized the unpredictable nature of a fifth-day wicket. “A lot of things can happen on the fifth day wicket. We have a positive mindset going into the last day. It depends on how we start the day.” BAN vs SL 1st Test

He stressed the importance of setting a challenging target: “If we can give them a good target, they will be under pressure. There’s a difference between playing normal cricket and playing under pressure. They will also be worried about losing the game. We want to give a good total.” Bangladesh will be keen to bat deep into the first session on Day 5 to set up a declaration. BAN vs SL 1st Test

Kamindu Mendis Remains Optimistic for Sri Lanka

Meanwhile, Kamindu Mendis, who scored a valuable 87 runs that took Sri Lanka close to Bangladesh’s first-innings total, maintained a fighting spirit despite his team’s lower-order collapse. He believes the game remains open for both teams on the final day.

“Our first target is to get their wickets,” Mendis asserted, outlining Sri Lanka’s strategy for Day 5. “Our target is also to win the game. If we can bowl them out in the first session, we can chase that down.”

He highlighted that time won’t be an issue if they can achieve early breakthroughs. “Whatever the score they get, we have another two sessions. We can still do that,” he added, referring to the remaining two sessions after the first.

Mendis acknowledged the pitch conditions: “It depends on the pitch conditions. We were scoring at a better rate. We need to get them out early in the first session and I am confident we can chase down the target. Our confidence is good. We will assess things as the wicket plays.” Sri Lanka will rely on their spinners to cause damage on a deteriorating surface, hoping to limit Bangladesh’s lead and then chase down the target. The final day promises a compelling contest as both teams push for a victory.
