A major Bavuma Injury Update has hit the South African cricket camp. Temba Bavuma, the victorious captain of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025, will miss the upcoming two-match Test series against Zimbabwe. Cricket South Africa (CSA) confirmed on Friday (June 20) that Bavuma has sustained a left hamstring strain.

In Bavuma’s absence, experienced spinner Keshav Maharaj will step up to lead South Africa. This series, marking the start of a new WTC cycle, will feature a much-changed Proteas squad.

Details of Bavuma’s Injury

Bavuma sustained the unfortunate injury while batting in the second innings. This occurred on Day 3 of the World Test Championship Final against Australia at Lord’s. Despite the pain, he bravely continued to bat, playing a crucial role in South Africa’s historic victory.

Cricket South Africa has stated that the right-handed batter will undergo further scans. These scans will help determine the exact extent and severity of his hamstring injury. His recovery timeline for future assignments remains uncertain until these assessments are complete.

This is not Bavuma’s first struggle with hamstring issues; he suffered similar injuries during the 2023 ODI World Cup and the Boxing Day Test against India in the same year. He has also had recurring elbow problems, often playing with his left elbow heavily strapped. Bavuma Injury Update

Maharaj Steps Up as Skipper

With Bavuma sidelined, Keshav Maharaj, South Africa’s veteran left-arm spinner, has been handed the captaincy reins for the Zimbabwe series. This marks Maharaj’s first time leading the Test side, though he has previously captained South Africa in both One Day Internationals (ODIs) and Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is).

Maharaj’s leadership will be crucial in guiding a relatively inexperienced squad. His calm demeanor and strategic acumen will be vital as South Africa navigates this transition period. Bavuma Injury Update

A Squad of Opportunity: Rested Stars and New Faces

South Africa has opted for a significant rotation policy for this series. Several key players from the WTC-winning squad have been rested. These include prominent names like Marco Jansen, Aiden Markram, Kagiso Rabada, Ryan Rickelton, and Tristan Stubbs. Their absence provides valuable rest ahead of a busy international schedule.

This mass resting has created a unique opportunity for emerging talent. The updated 15-member squad now includes five uncapped players. These exciting prospects are:

  • Lhuan-dre Pretorius
  • Lesego Senokwane
  • Codi Yusuf
  • Dewald Brevis
  • Prenelan Subrayen

Their inclusion highlights CSA’s commitment to building depth and exposing young players to the Test arena. Fast bowler Lungi Ngidi will also only be available for the second Test. Notably, no direct replacement has been named for the regular skipper, further trimming the squad from its initial 16 members. Bavuma Injury Update

Series Details and Squad Departure Bavuma Injury Update

Both Test matches of the series will be hosted at the Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. The first Test is scheduled to begin on June 28, running until July 2. The second Test will follow, starting on July 6 and concluding on July 10. Bavuma Injury Update

The South Africa squad is set to depart for Bulawayo on June 24. They will aim to acclimatize quickly and prepare for what will be a challenging, yet crucial, series for their new-look Test team. Bavuma Injury Update

South Africa Squad for Zimbabwe Test Series:

  • Keshav Maharaj (captain)
  • David Bedingham
  • Matthew Breetzke
  • Dewald Brevis
  • Corbin Bosch
  • Tony de Zorzi
  • Zubayr Hamza
  • Kwena Maphaka
  • Wiaan Mulder
  • Lungi Ngidi (second Test only)
  • Lhuan-dre Pretorius
  • Lesego Senokwane
  • Prenelan Subrayen
  • Kyle Verreynne (wicketkeeper)
  • Codi Yusuf

This series will be a significant test of South Africa’s bench strength and leadership without their regular captain. It presents an invaluable chance for the uncapped players to make their mark on the international stage.
