The backlash intensified as many pointed out that the real ‘El Clasico’ of the IPL is widely considered to be the rivalry between Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings — the two most successful teams in the league’s history. Their encounters typically draw massive attention and have a legacy that far outweighs most other matchups.
Fans were not happy with Punjab’s post and decided to roast them on social media. They accused Punjab of trying too hard to hype up a rivalry that does not exist. Punjab and Rajasthan, both tried to hype the rivalry using their head coaches – Ricky Ponting and Rahul Dravid, two of the greatest Test and ODI batters in the history of cricket.
Trolling aside, Punjab have actually had a great start to the series clinching dominating wins in the first two matches. In the first game, they blasted 243 runs against Gujarat Titans, and in the second match, they chased down 172 runs against Lucknow Super Giants.
After winning the first two games away from home, Punjab are playing their first home match of the season against Rajasthan. They will hope to turn their fortunes around at home this season.
Under the leadership of Shreyas Iyer and coaching of Ricky Ponting, Punjab have brought in an aggressive template, which was not natural to Punjab in the previous seasons. However, the new and ‘brave’ style of play promised by Ricky Ponting ahead of the season seems to have sat well with Punjab.
