The IPL New Schedule is here, and cricket fans can rejoice as the Indian Premier League is all set to resume on May 17, with the final match scheduled for June 3. This announcement of the IPL New Schedule comes from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) following a brief suspension of the tournament last Friday due to the recent hostilities between India and Pakistan. According to the IPL New Schedule, the remaining matches will now be hosted across six different venues, although the locations for the crucial play-off matches are yet to be finalized.
Ever since India and Pakistan declared a ceasefire, the BCCI has been actively working on the IPL New Schedule to ensure the smooth restart of the league. After careful consultation with the government, the Board officially released the revised IPL New Schedule. This new schedule indicates that the tournament will recommence in Bengaluru on Saturday, with a highly anticipated match between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Kolkata Knight Riders. The following day, Sunday, will feature a double-header as per the IPL New Schedule, with matches in Jaipur and Delhi. The afternoon game will see Rajasthan Royals take on Punjab Kings, followed by an evening clash between Delhi Capitals and Gujarat Titans.
In addition to these three cities, the IPL New Schedule also includes Lucknow, Ahmedabad, and Mumbai as hosts for the remaining league fixtures. A previously called-off match between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals, which was interrupted on May 8, has now been rescheduled to take place in Jaipur on May 24, as outlined in the IPL New Schedule.
During the finalization of the IPL New Schedule, the BCCI considered various options, including concentrating all the remaining matches in Chennai, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad, which are geographically distant from the Pakistan border and the Line of Control. However, the IPL New Schedule reveals that Chennai and Hyderabad will not host any more league stage matches. It remains to be seen whether these cities will be allocated any of the play-off fixtures in the IPL New Schedule. Kolkata has also been excluded from hosting further matches, primarily due to a forecast of rain in the coming days, according to sources within the BCCI.
Among the teams currently in contention for the play-offs, the Punjab Kings will be the only franchise to lose their home advantage in the revised IPL New Schedule. They were originally scheduled to play two of their remaining home matches (including the postponed game against Delhi Capitals) in Dharamsala. Instead, the IPL New Schedule dictates that both of these games will now be played at the Sawai Man Singh Stadium in Jaipur.
While the initial plan was to conclude the IPL by May 31, the BCCI has now extended the tournament by three days in the IPL New Schedule, with the final match now slated for June 3. This adjustment in the IPL New Schedule is understood to be partly due to the increasing summer heat, as the BCCI was not keen on scheduling more double-headers, which would have significantly increased the workload on the players. The IPL New Schedule only includes two double-headers, both on successive Sundays (May 18 and May 25).
The IPL New Schedule also includes other minor adjustments. For instance, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, who were originally set to finish their league campaign at home, will now play their final league match at the Ekana Stadium against Lucknow Super Giants. Regarding the play-offs and the final, which were initially planned for Hyderabad and Kolkata, sources within the board have indicated that these cities are not entirely ruled out, and a final decision will be made in the coming days concerning the IPL New Schedule for these crucial matches. Should both Hyderabad and Kolkata be unable to host, Ahmedabad stands a strong chance to host all four games, although sources suggest that another venue might share the responsibility.
Last Thursday, despite the rising tensions, an IPL match proceeded in Dharamsala before being called off mid-way. Around the same time, a total blackout occurred in Pathankot – located just 80km away – due to a drone strike. Following a phone call from a high-ranking BCCI official, the match was halted, and on Friday, the BCCI officially suspended the league for a week, leading to the need for an IPL New Schedule. However, after the ceasefire announcement on Saturday, the Board instructed the franchises to have their players reassembled by Tuesday. Gujarat Titans and Mumbai Indians have already resumed their training, with the remaining teams expected to follow suit by Wednesday, in preparation for the matches under the IPL New Schedule.
With a significant number of overseas players having already returned to their respective countries, franchises have voiced concerns regarding their availability for the matches in the IPL New Schedule. Whether all of these players will rejoin their squads remains a significant question for the franchises as they prepare for the revised tournament. There are indications that Australian pacers Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc may not rejoin RCB and Delhi Capitals for the remaining matches due to minor injuries. Both players are in contention to play in the World Test Championship final against South Africa, which is scheduled to begin on June 11.
