The KL Rahul Batting Position is a big talking point as India gets ready for the upcoming Test series against England in 2025. This is especially true because two of India’s biggest Test batters, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, retired from Test cricket last month.

Their retirement means there are now key spots open in the Indian batting lineup. Because of this, KL Rahul has become the most senior batter in the team.

On English soil, Rahul has played nine Test matches so far. He has scored 614 runs with an average of 34.11, which means he scores about 34 runs every time he gets out. He has also hit two centuries (scores of 100 runs or more) in England.

In the 2018 series alone, he scored 299 runs in five matches. His highest score of 149 runs came in 2018 at The Oval in the fifth Test. These past performances make his KL Rahul Batting Position crucial to consider.

Rahul’s Preparation and Recent Form

Unlike other Indian team members, KL Rahul asked the BCCI (India’s cricket board) if he could go to England early. He wanted to get used to the conditions there and play for the India ‘A’ team against England Lions in their second unofficial Test match.

He showed that this trust was well-placed by scoring a brilliant 116 runs while opening the innings with Yashasvi Jaiswal. This strong performance meant that another opener, Abhimanyu Easwaran, batted at number 3 in that game.

This excellent form makes the discussion about the KL Rahul Batting Position even more interesting for the selectors.

Because Kohli and Sharma have retired, Rahul is now the most experienced batter in the Indian Test team. His century in the ‘A’ game has given the Indian team management a “healthy headache.”

This means they have a good problem: Rahul has played so well that he almost certainly has a place in the main team, but deciding where he should bat is now a challenge. This makes the KL Rahul Batting Position a central puzzle piece for India’s strategy.

Opening Options and Matthew Hayden’s Bold Idea

While Rahul’s hundred makes him seem like a certain choice to open the batting with Jaiswal, India still has two other players who can open: Abhimanyu Easwaran and Sai Sudarshan.

Easwaran, from Bengal, scored two half-centuries (50 runs or more) against England Lions, showing his good form. This gives India more choices for the opening roles, which could impact the ultimate KL Rahul Batting Position.

However, former Australia opener Matthew Hayden has a different idea. He believes that Rahul would be much better suited to bat at number 4, rather than opening the innings.

“I have just got one other issue here as well. KL Rahul, he will open. I am just going to make that call. My problem with that is I believe he is your best player in Test match cricket,” Hayden told Star Sports.

This bold statement by Hayden brings a new perspective to the KL Rahul Batting Position debate.

Hayden went even further, saying, “He can be a like-for-like replacement of Virat Kohli, absolutely custom-made at No. 4.” Hayden, a powerful left-handed batter who was a dominant force in world cricket himself, thinks Rahul is the perfect fit to take over Kohli’s important number 4 spot.

Rahul was one of India’s best batters when he opened the innings in Australia during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (against Australia), scoring 276 runs in 10 innings, including two half-centuries. Despite this success as an opener, Hayden strongly believes Rahul shouldn’t open in England. This is a crucial point for the KL Rahul Batting Position.

Hayden’s Concerns About Rahul as an Opener

Hayden explained his reason for not liking Rahul as an opening batter, drawing from past experiences. “The reason why I don’t like him as an opening batter, and we saw this in Australia as well, he gets out 57% of the time caught behind, nicked off. So he looks so technically sound, how amazing is it, and then suddenly he is out,” the Australian explained.

When a batter gets “caught behind” or “nick off,” it means the ball slightly touches the edge of their bat and goes into the wicketkeeper’s gloves. This often happens when batters try to play at balls outside their body early in their innings, especially against fast bowlers with a new ball.

Hayden suggests that while Rahul looks technically very good, he has a tendency to get out this way as an opener, which is a risk. This specific weakness, according to Hayden, is why the KL Rahul Batting Position should be lower down the order, where the ball is older and less likely to move sideways as much.

The Importance of the Number 4 Spot and Team Balance

The number 4 batting position in Test cricket is highly important. It’s usually where a team’s best and most reliable batter plays. This player often comes in when the new ball is still relatively hard, but the very first swing of the ball might have reduced.

They need to be able to steady the innings if early wickets fall, but also score runs quickly when needed. Virat Kohli was a master at this role for India for many years. Hayden’s suggestion that KL Rahul is “custom-made” for this spot means he believes Rahul has the patience, technique, and scoring ability to fill Kohli’s big shoes. This makes the KL Rahul Batting Position at No. 4 a strategic consideration.

If Rahul bats at number 4, it would mean that India needs to find two dedicated openers. This is where Easwaran and Sudarshan come into play. While Rahul has opened successfully in the past, putting him at number 4 would allow him to face an older ball, potentially reducing the risk of being caught behind, which Hayden pointed out. This could also give him more time to settle into his innings before facing the most challenging bowling. This move would show a clear tactical choice regarding the KL Rahul Batting Position.

The decision regarding the KL Rahul Batting Position will significantly impact the entire batting order. If he opens, the middle order might have a less experienced player. If he bats at number 4, it provides stability there but opens up the question of who will handle the new ball. This creates a “healthy headache” for the team management, as they have several talented players but only limited spots.

Ultimately, the choice will come down to what the team management believes is the best balance for success in the challenging English conditions, ensuring the most impactful KL Rahul Batting Position. The pressure is on, not just for Rahul to perform, but for the selectors to make the right call for the team’s long-term success.
