Kusal Mendis Century Powers Sri Lanka to Series Win Over Bangladesh

Sri Lanka clinched a comprehensive 99-run win over Bangladesh in the third and final ODI in Dambulla, securing the series 2-1. The win was set up by a spectacular Kusal Mendis century and a clinical bowling performance, while Bangladesh faltered once again due to their inability to build strong partnerships. This victory marked Sri Lanka’s eighth series win out of their last nine ODI assignments, reflecting their rise in consistency and team morale. Stand-in skipper Charith Asalanka and head coach Sanath Jayasuriya have been instrumental in this transformation, as highlighted by Mendis in the post-match press conference.

Calm Atmosphere Breeds Confidence: Mendis Reflects on Growth

Mendis scored a brilliant 124 runs off 106 balls, blending aggression with maturity. He credited the coaching staff and team environment for helping him learn from past mistakes, particularly his rash dismissal in the second ODI where he made a rapid 56 off 31 but failed to convert it into a big score. Kusal Mendis Century

“After I got out in the second ODI, I realized I had made a poor decision. I was the set batter and should have batted through. This time I decided to mix caution with aggression,” said Mendis.

The 29-year-old said he had long conversations with batting coach Thilina Kandamby, who repeatedly emphasized the importance of building on starts and playing the anchor role when in good touch.

“Kandamby reminded me to go for a big score after getting to 50. He had high expectations from me, and I’m glad I fulfilled that today,” he added. Kusal Mendis Century

Mendis’ partnership with Asalanka (58 runs off 71 balls) was the turning point of the game, as the duo added 124 runs for the fourth wicket, steering Sri Lanka from a shaky 103/3 to a strong position of control.

Bangladesh Falters: Mehidy Hasan Laments Lack of Partnerships

In stark contrast, the Bangladesh batting unit crumbled under pressure. Chasing a target of 286, the visitors were bowled out for 186 in just 39.4 overs. Their chase lacked structure, momentum, and most crucially, partnerships.

Mehidy Hasan, who was leading the side, was candid in admitting the failures. Kusal Mendis Century

“We got some thirties and forties but couldn’t build any meaningful partnerships. In ODIs, it’s impossible to chase without solid middle-over stands,” said Mehidy.

Bangladesh’s innings was characterized by poor shot selection, lack of intent, and back-to-back dismissals, which disrupted any rhythm they tried to build. Kusal Mendis Century

Key Dismissals Changed the Game

One of the biggest moments in the Bangladesh innings came when Mehidy himself got out at a crucial juncture. He was trying to accelerate with Towhid Hridoy at the other end but ended up mistiming a shot.

“I tried to take a calculated risk, but couldn’t execute the shot. Had it gone well, it could have been a six. Instead, it put the team under pressure,” he admitted.

Towhid Hridoy, who scored 51 off 78 balls, was criticized for his slow approach, but Mehidy defended him, saying the lack of support from the other end made it hard for Hridoy to increase his scoring rate. Kusal Mendis Century

“He couldn’t push the pace because wickets kept falling. It’s difficult to score fast when you’re constantly losing partners,” Mehidy said.

Worrying Signs for Bangladesh’s Middle Order

Another area of concern was Bangladesh’s inability to bat out the full 50 overs. They fell short by more than 10 overs, a pattern that has repeated in several recent games. Kusal Mendis Century

“It’s troubling that we couldn’t bat the full quota of overs. Our middle-order batters have to take more responsibility. We have a lot of cricket coming up, and this is something we need to fix quickly,” Mehidy concluded.

Statistical Highlights of the Match

  • Kusal Mendis: 124 (106 balls, 12 fours, 2 sixes)

  • Charith Asalanka: 58 (71 balls)

  • Sri Lanka Total: 285/7 in 50 overs

  • Bangladesh Total: 186 all out in 39.4 overs

  • Top Bangladesh Scorer: Towhid Hridoy – 51 (78 balls)

  • Player of the Match: Kusal Mendis

  • Series Result: Sri Lanka win 3rd ODI and clinch series 2-1

Conclusion

Sri Lanka on the Rise, Bangladesh Needs Reflection

The Dambulla ODI not only sealed the series for Sri Lanka but also highlighted the contrasting trajectories of the two teams. While Sri Lanka’s dressing room exudes calmness, mentorship, and strategic clarity, Bangladesh seems to be grappling with middle-order inconsistencies and leadership questions. Kusal Mendis Century

Kusal Mendis’s ability to learn, adapt, and deliver under pressure showcased his evolution into a dependable match-winner. With young talents and a supportive backroom staff, Sri Lanka looks poised for a strong run in the upcoming ODI season. Kusal Mendis Century

Meanwhile, Bangladesh will need to urgently address their middle-order woes and lack of resilience under pressure if they wish to compete with top-tier teams.
