Rashid Khan’s IPL Struggles: Is Afghanistan’s Spin Wizard Losing His Edge?
Rashid Khan’s Form Dips in IPL 2025: A Shadow of His Former Self?
Renowned for his pinpoint accuracy and deceptive variations, Rashid Khan has long been a force in T20 cricket. However, in IPL 2025, the Afghan spin maestro has struggled to find his rhythm. Representing Gujarat Titans, Rashid has managed just one wicket in four matches, leaking runs at an economy of 10.21.
The 26-year-old has gone wicketless in three straight games — only the second such instance in his IPL career, with both occurring in his last eight matches. After returning from back surgery in 2024, Rashid’s form has seen a dip, taking just 10 wickets in the previous season at an 8.40 economy rate. For a player once feared for his mystery, the ongoing season marks a rare slump.
This season, opposition batters have taken a more confident approach against Rashid Khan. Unlike previous years when teams chose to play him out cautiously, they’re now attacking his spells. As a result, Rashid has been unusually expensive and has struggled with the control that once made him nearly unplayable in T20 cricket.

Shane Watson on Rashid Khan’s IPL Struggles: “Never Write Off a Champion”
Shane Watson believes Rashid Khan’s recent IPL dip stems from lingering effects of his back injury. “He’s slightly off his best. His length isn’t as consistent, which used to be his biggest strength,” Watson said. “He’s still managing his variations post-injury, but Rashid is a champion—you can never write him off.”
Rashid was sidelined for four months post-surgery and, despite returning last year, may not be fully at peak fitness. Though GT physios haven’t flagged any major issues, the Afghan star has barely had a break since his comeback.
Rashid Khan’s demanding schedule—featuring stints in the 2024 T20 World Cup, IPL, MLC, The Hundred, Shpageeza League, and SA20—has left little room for rest post-surgery. The constant travel and packed calendar may be impacting his form.
Former India Strength & Conditioning coach Ramji Srinivasan highlights the importance of proper rehabilitation after back surgery. “Recovery can vary widely depending on the intensity of the surgery,” he says. “It could take anywhere from 3 months to a year.”
Ramji Srinivasan further emphasized that recovery is not just about successful surgery. “Even if the operation goes well, ineffective rehab, poor strength and conditioning, inadequate nutrition, or a weak mindset can derail an athlete’s return,” he explained. “Having the right support system is critical to get back on track.”
On the subject of “workload management,” Ramji stressed that it’s often misunderstood. “It’s a broad concept—not just limited to strength and conditioning. Coaches, physios, players, recovery experts, and massage therapists all need to collaborate. It’s a collective responsibility,” he added.
Raees Ahmadzai, former Afghanistan assistant coach and current U-19 mentor, believes Rashid Khan is simply navigating a rough patch. “He’s tough as nails and will fight his way out,” Ahmadzai said. “Even legends like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have faced similar phases. Cricketers of Rashid’s caliber know how to bounce back.”
Ahmadzai also shared confidence in Rashid’s work ethic: “The Rashid I know must have already rewatched all 16 of his overs multiple times with the video analyst. He’ll identify what’s missing and make the necessary adjustments.”
