Shreyas Iyer injury update: Shreyas Iyer discharged from hospital, stable now: BCCI update
India’s ODI vice-captain Shreyas Iyer has been discharged from a Sydney hospital following a spleen and rib cage injury suffered during the third ODI against Australia on October 25, 2025. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed the development in an official statement on Saturday, assuring fans that the 30-year-old is stable and recovering well.
Iyer suffered internal injury during fielding effort
The incident took place when Iyer made a valiant effort to take a running catch of Australian wicketkeeper-batter Alex Carey off Harshit Rana’s bowling. While completing the catch successfully, Iyer landed awkwardly on his left side, immediately clutching his abdomen and showing visible discomfort.
The medical team rushed onto the field as Iyer was seen writhing in pain before being stretchered off. He was later taken to a nearby hospital in Sydney, where scans revealed a laceration in his spleen and internal bleeding around the rib cage.
BCCI confirms successful medical procedure
In an official statement, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia provided detailed information about the injury and medical care received by the Indian cricketer. Shreyas Iyer injury update
Shreyas Iyer sustained a blunt injury to his abdomen while fielding during the third ODI against Australia on 25th October 2025, resulting in a laceration of his spleen with internal bleeding. The injury was promptly identified, and the bleeding was immediately arrested following a minor procedure. He has undergone appropriate medical management for the same, the statement read.
Saikia further mentioned that the procedure was successful and that Iyer is under observation as part of the post-surgery recovery process.
“He (Iyer) is now stable and recovering well. The BCCI Medical Team, along with specialists in Sydney and India, are pleased with his recovery, and he has been discharged from the hospital today,” the release added.
Out of action for at least two months
The injury, though non-life-threatening, will keep Iyer out of action for at least two months, ruling him out of India’s upcoming home T20I and Test series. BCCI officials confirmed that he will remain in Sydney for follow-up consultations before flying back to India once cleared fit to travel.
Shreyas will continue to stay in Sydney for follow-up consultations and will return to India once he is deemed fit to fly,” Saikia said.
Gratitude to medical teams in Sydney and India
The BCCI expressed appreciation for the coordinated medical efforts between Australian and Indian specialists.
“The BCCI extends its heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Kouroush Haghigi and his team in Sydney, along with Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala in India, for ensuring Shreyas received the best treatment for his injury,” the statement read.
Team India rallies behind Iyer
A BCCI source said that the entire team “was deeply concerned” for Iyer, who has been an important part of the middle order in ODIs.
“Shreyas has always been a fighter. The way he handled himself even in pain shows his mental toughness. Everyone in the dressing room is hoping for his quick recovery,” a team insider said.
Iyer’s recent form before the injury
Before that unlucky injury, Iyer was really hitting his stride. In the three-game series against Australia, he knocked a steady 57 in the first ODI and looked ready for another big score in Sydney until he got hurt. Not long before that, he played in India’s home series against South Africa and did a great job shoring up the middle order when the team needed it.
Iyer’s performances had seen him emerge as one of India’s most reliable ODI batters, capable of both anchoring innings and accelerating in the middle overs. His absence will be a big blow for India’s white-ball plans in the build-up to the 2026 Champions Trophy.
Recovery timeline and rehabilitation
Medical experts estimate that Iyer’s recovery could take six to eight weeks, depending on how quickly the spleen heals. During this period, he will be advised complete rest, followed by a light training regime under the supervision of the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru once he returns to India.
The injury also means Iyer will miss the start of the 2026 domestic season and might require additional time to regain match fitness. Shreyas Iyer injury updateShreyas Iyer injury update

“This is not a bone or muscle injury that allows quick recovery. The spleen is a delicate organ, and we need to make sure it heals properly before he resumes physical activity. The focus is on full recovery rather than rushing his comeback.” Shreyas Iyer injury updateShreyas Iyer injury update
What’s next for Team India
With Iyer sidelined, India will likely look toward Rajat Patidar or Tilak Varma as possible replacements in the middle order for the upcoming T20I and ODI series. The team management is expected to announce the updated squad once Iyer’s medical report is reviewed by the selectors.
Despite the setback, BCCI officials remain confident that the vice-captain will make a full recovery and return stronger. Shreyas Iyer injury updateShreyas Iyer injury updateShreyas Iyer injury update
