Sri Lanka Pacer Ruled Out

The Sri Lanka camp has been dealt a significant blow ahead of the second Test against Bangladesh, with fast bowler Milan Rathnayake ruled out due to a left-side strain sustained in the Galle Test. This comes at a critical juncture for the hosts, who are vying to clinch their opening series in the ICC World Test Championship 2025-27 cycle. The absence of a key frontline pacer will undoubtedly impact their bowling attack as they head into this series decider with all to play for. Sri Lanka Pacer Ruled Out

Rathnayake’s injury, coupled with the retirement of veteran all-rounder Angelo Mathews after the series opener, presents a considerable challenge for the Sri Lankan squad. Mathews’ experience and all-round capabilities will be sorely missed, leaving a void that the team will need to address strategically. The hosts have swiftly moved to bolster their ranks, adding the experienced left-arm pacer Vishwa Fernando and the promising young tweaker Dunith Wellalage to the squad. Sri Lanka Pacer Ruled Out

Vishwa Fernando, with 27 Test appearances and 79 dismissals to his name, brings a wealth of experience to the pace attack. His ability to swing the ball and pick up crucial wickets will be vital in the absence of Rathnayake. On the other hand, Dunith Wellalage, despite having only a solitary Test appearance against Pakistan in 2022, is a prodigious talent in the spin department. His inclusion suggests a potential shift in strategy, potentially favoring a more spin-heavy attack depending on the pitch conditions. Sri Lanka Pacer Ruled Out

The first Test between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka concluded in a stalemate, with the visitors showcasing a stellar batting performance. This sets the stage for a compelling second Test, where both teams will be eager to secure a series victory. This series marks the inaugural assignment for both sides in the new ICC World Test Championship cycle, making a positive start crucial for their long-term aspirations. The ability of the new additions to step up and perform will be key to Sri Lanka’s success as they navigate these significant personnel changes.

Sri Lanka Squad: Dhananjaya De Silva (c), Pathum Nissanka, Oshada Fernando, Lahiru Udara, Dinesh Chandimal, Kusal Mendis, Kamindu Mendis, Pasindu Sooriyabandara, Sonal Dinusha, Dunith Wellalage, Pavan Rathnayake, Prabath Jayasuriya, Tharindu Ratnayake, Akila Dananjaya, Asitha Fernando, Kasun Rajitha, Vishwa Fernando, Isitha Wijesundara.
